The Zollverein Coal Mine was the world’s largest coal-mining facility. During WWII, many prisoners of war were put to forced labor there. However, Germany didn’t try to downplay its war crimes to register the coal mine on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Germany made it clear that it committed wrongdoing.
