5th Time DUI: The Most Painful DUI Arrest Ever!

On the evening of May 13, 2023, law enforcement officers in Ohio received a call from a concerned witness about a blue Honda nearly colliding with a pole at an intersection. The responding sergeant and officer located the blue Honda in a parking lot nearby. As the officers arrived, they spotted a woman, Laura Stephens, falling asleep in the driver’s seat of the still-running car. They observed the vehicle parked crooked outside the lines of the parking spot. Ms. Stephens was unaware of the officers’ presence next to her open window until Sgt. Stervagi-Rivera made their presence known. Upon interaction, the officers noticed her slurred speech, a potent alcoholic odor, and bloodshot eyes. Sgt. Stervagi-Rivera asked Ms. Stephens, “What are you doing?“ she replied, “Just chilling.“ Ms. Stephens also advised officers that she was just parked in a parking spot. Ms. Stephens admitted to drinking, saying, “Yes, I have; I’m not going to lie to you.“ ’s agreed to perform Field Sobriety Tests but failed them. Based on her test performance and previously observed symptoms, officers arrested ’s for OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired). After her arrest Ms. Stephens displayed aggressive behavior, hitting her head against the car partition. At the jail, she continued screaming, resisting the officers, and acting belligerently. Officers transported ’s to a holding cell, where she continued her uncooperative behavior, using offensive language toward officers and kicking the cell door. At the station, a background check revealed that this was Ms. Stephen’s fifth OVI incident.
