Bach: Cantata No. 32 “Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen“, Hermann Scherchen, Vienna 1951

Johann Sebastian Bach Cantata BWV 32 “Liebster Jesu, mein Verlangen“ Magda László, soprano Alfred Poell, baritone Vienna Academy Chamber Choir Vienna State Opera Orchestra Hans Kamesch, oboe - Wilhelm Hübner, violin - Anton Heiller, harpsichord conductor: Hermann Scherchen recorded in 1951 Transfer from vinyl LP Westminster WL 5122 (1952). Copyright has expired in the European Union. Nowadays it is hard to imagine that a conductor who was known as a pioneer of Mahler, Schönberg and the avant-garde was one of the first to record Bach cantatas. This is one of his finest. The recording is available on CD by Archipel, but I think their transfer is a bit too flat in pitch. Obviously they set it to A = 440 Hz, but in Vienna a higher concert pitch was usual. According to my calibration, my speed is the correct one - the movements are a few seconds shorter than in the Archipel edition.
