Victorian London’s Most Dangerous Slum (Fenian Barracks)

The Fenian Barracks was a Victorian slum that even the police feared to enter. This London neighbourhood had a dangerous reputation as a wretched rookery of villains, with rats yet more terrifying. In 1897 Charles Booth sent an investigator into these streets for his inquiry into life and labour in London, accompanied by a police inspector for his own safety. You will hear, in the investigator’s words, the reality of life on the mean streets and what he thought about the people he met. Find out why this was thought to be the worst slum in late 19th Century London. It was certainly a pocket of chronic poverty, but did it and its inhabitants deserve such a bad reputation? 📣 JOIN to support the channel as a Member: 👍 Support the channel (donations): Do you like history?
