In medieval times it spread both to the west and east. In the west it evolved into a “shawn“ and later to the modern oboe. In Korea the “classic“ variant “senap“ or “taepyeongso“ (태평소) is still in use as a ceremonial instrument. By adding the finger mechanics of the oboe to the senap it was developed into a fully chromatic (western style scale) by the DPRK in the 1970s. The tune he is playing is the Korean traditional “Arirang“ with accompaniment by the small gong “kkwaenggwari“ (꽹과리) which is very typical for Korean folk music.
