Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis: Civilian Infrastructure Attacks & Population Needs | United Nations

Briefing journalists in New York from Kyiv on Monday (31 July), the United Nations (UN) Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Denise Brown, said that civilian infrastructure continues to be hit during the war and that humanitarian needs are increasing. “What I saw in Mykolaiv and Odesa last week is being repeated across many big cities in Ukraine. This morning in Kryvyi Rih, an apartment building was hit. People have been killed, and many bodies are still under the rubble. I stated that over the weekend. Again, it’s constant in Kherson and over the weekend in Kharkiv. So just a regular targeting of these big cities,” said Brown. She stressed that “the needs of the population are increasing, and the UN’s humanitarian response plan is only 30 percent funded. “It’s almost the first of August, but it gets cold very early in Ukraine, and you’ve heard me talk in the past about the winterization. We’re already starting to prepare for this. We have 1000s and 1000s of damaged houses, and apartment blocks, since last winter, so this is additional damage on top of what we had to do with last winter,” the coordinator highlighted. “As the war continues, people remain displaced and live in communities where they’re afraid. It’s a continuation of the dramatic situation and the only thing that’s going to relieve that situation is if the war stops,” she concluded.
