Michael Nyman - La Traversée De Paris (Full Album)
Originally released on a limited run by Critereon in 1989, La Traversée De Paris was composed for an audio-visual exhibition in Paris constructed as part of the bicentennial celebration of the French Revolution. Some of these pieces were immediately hived off into the score for Peter Greenaway’s film Prospero’s Books, others were later revised and adapted for inclusion in other works - the track ’Ah ça ira’ was later incorporated into both String Quartet No. 5 and Symphony No. 5 whilst the final track ’L’Arche de La Défense’ became the basis for the choral work ’Out of the Ruins’ that in turn was arranged to become String Quartet No. 3. Other pieces here are already re-purposed versions of earlier compositions - ’Les Murs des Fédérés’ is derived from the original Parts 1 and 2 of Nyman’s 1985 piece “Memorial“ (Part 3 being famously used in another Greenaway film “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover“).
