OMELETO ON SOCIAL Instagram: Twitter: Facebook: A young woman is dropped off at college, on her own for the first time in her life. Feeling isolated and alone, she has trouble making friends at first as she adjusts to life on campus. Eventually, she finds others having trouble as well -- and discovers a new group of friends. They go about their lives as college students, studying, hanging out and having fun. And their friendship deepens over the years, as they move in with each other and help one another through crises and challenges. However, the group’s bond is challenged as they confront the changes in their relationships with one another and the inevitabilities of adulthood and separation that they all will face. Directed, written and animated by Michaela Wadzinski, this animated short captures the joys, sorrows and challenges of the college experience, told through the collective experiences of a close-knit group of friends named Sloan, Edwin, Wade and April. They all meet as shy, hesitant college first-years, and the narrative spans their entire college careers to graduation. The characters change hairstyles, living arrangements, interests and hobbies over time, but they all help one another grow into adults, gaining maturity, experience and self-knowledge. Told without dialogue, the film’s visuals meld the pleasing clarity of 2-D line animation with textured, sometimes moody backgrounds that sometimes look like blurred photos. The juxtaposition speaks to the everyday, relatable subject, as well as the space between childhood and adulthood that these four friends find themselves navigating together. Nimbly paced and scored by a pleasingly mellow electro-pop score, the storytelling is packed with the quotidian yet momentous events that make up collegiate life, from having roommates to navigating academics to preparing for careers. While they experience some friction as they move in together, the real conflict emerges when the relationships between some of the friends change, challenging the dynamic between them. Looming in the distance is the biggest change for all of them: graduation, and then adulthood with all its responsibilities. Even-keeled, warm and compelling, “Know You Well“ celebrates college as a rite of passage, where young people explore their interests, find “their people“ and grow into their adult selves with one another, often making bonds for life. We don’t get an intimate immersion into any one character, but as a story celebrating the importance of friendship, the collective ensemble is the focus. The short has the scope of a few seasons of television, but with its wide-ranging narrative scale, it deftly captures the beautiful, immense growth that happens during the college years -- and how special it is to grow up together with a chosen group of friends. Its final heartwarming moments celebrate this unique connection, as these characters disperse to their grown-up lives, carrying the care, affection and confidence of loving friends with them.
