It was first held from 27 May to 1 June 1953 as the East African Coronation Safari in Kenya, Uganda and Tanganyika,[1] as a celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. In 1960 it was renamed the East African Safari Rally and kept that name until 1974, when it became the Safari Rally. Widely regarded as one of the most popular African rallies, it’s set to make a return to the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2020 after a 17-year hiatus. Le Rallye Safari, ou Safari Rally (surnommé the World’s toughest rally, le Rallye le plus difficile au monde), antérieurement appelé East African Coronation Safari de 1953 à 1959, puis East African Safari Rally de 1960 à 1974, est un rallye automobile créé en l’honneur du couronnement (“coronation“) de la reine Élisabeth II en mai 1953, par Eric Cecil (vainqueur en 1956), L.F. Menton et Ian Craigie, trois officiers de l’armée de sa Majesté membres du Royal East African Automobile club. Die Safari Rallye wird von vielen als die härteste Rallye angesehen.
