Suspect Gets Shot After Pointing a Handgun Toward Modesto Police Officers

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) * Modesto, California — On February 13, 2024, at 12:40 a.m., Officer Clayton Keener conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Paradise Road and S. Martin Luther King Drive. The driver, an adult female and a passenger later identified as 41-year-old Mark Coke Jr. were contacted by the officer. The driver provided her license while the passenger, Coke identified himself verbally. The primary officer requested a backup officer while he verified the driver and passenger’s information. The identity provided by the passenger, was determined not to be his and came back to someone who was on searchable probation. Officer Rafael Campos arrived as a backup officer and was directed to keep an eye on the occupants of the car. Shortly after, officer Keener asked the driver to step out of her car. He attempted to confirm Coke’s true identity, from the driver. When officer Keener returned to the car, he met up with officer Campos who was standing next to the front passenger door where he was seated. They both instructed Coke to step out of the car but before doing so, he appeared to be reaching for something and would not raise his left hand. As officer Campos reached over to control Coke’s arm, Coke brandished a gun and pointed it towards the officer’s direction. Both officers discharged their firearms as they retreated from the car. Just prior to officer Keener transitioning over to his handgun, he deployed his taser. Officers waited for additional help, including a ballistic shield, before approaching Coke. Officers recovered a loaded 9mm Ruger. Coke received medical aid from the officers until paramedics arrived.
