Australia no longer recognises West Jerusalem as capital of Israel

Australia will no longer recognise West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel – reversing a decision by the Morrison government in 2018. Foreign Minister Penny Wong accused former prime minister Scott Morrison of making a politically motivated decision in an attempt to win votes in the seat of Wentworth. Former Australian ambassador to Israel Dave Sharma said even if it was politically motivated “it didn’t work – I didn’t win the seat”. “We continued it as a policy and we took it to the 2019 election,” Mr Sharma said.
