English Pronunciation - The R vs L sounds (/r/ vs /l/)
In this full, free English Pronunciation lesson for ESL students, I’m going to help you to learn how to pronounce the R and L sounds (IPA /r/ and /l/) correctly, just like a native speaker of English.
These two sounds can be especially difficult for Asian students, such as those from China, Japan or South Korea. This is because these two sounds are almost identical (or non-existent) in those languages.
in order to make the L sound, your tongue tip should be up and forward, and to make the R sound it is down (not touching the alveolar ridge) and further back. In the R sound, the tip of the tongue should not be touching anything. In the L sound, however, the tip of the tongue is up against the roof of the mouth, behind the front teeth.
