N. Korea launches solid-fuel Hwasong-18 ICBM, calls it a ’major success’
한미 핵 작전 합의 직후 北, 단거리탄도미사일 이어 고체 ICBM 도발
(MYERS) Q1. North Korea fired an ICBM on Monday just hours after it fired a short-range missile on Sunday night. Before we talk about the ICBM what could be the reason behind two consecutive launches?
(GO) Q2. I would like to ask more about the capability of the solid-fuel ICBM --the Hwasong-18. The latest ICBM launch was fired at a lofted angle, but if fired upright, the U.S. would be within its reach, right?
(MYERS) Q3. Regarding the short-range ballistic missile there are many speculations. Some say it was a response to the U.S. nuclear-powered submarine the Missouri which had arrived in Busan city while others say the missile was led by Russia, applying its own new technology for war. What are the possibilities?
(GO) Q4. The back-to-back missile launches came just days after Seoul and Washington held the second session of the Nuclear Consultative Group. There they agreed to complete the guidelines on the planning and operation of a shared nuclear strategy. Could you tell us more about this?
(MYERS) Q5. Seoul and Washington also agreed to incorporate nuclear operations scenarios in next year’s allied military exercises for the first time. Could you tell us what this is about?
(GO) Q6. When making remarks regarding the NCG Principal Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo said that South Korea will coordinate bilateral and trilateral measures with the U.S. and Japan if North Korea continues to engage in provocations. What could those measures be?
(MYERS) Q7. The three countries began to operate a system for the real-time sharing of North Korean ballistic missile warning data. Now, how would the three countries be able to deal with North Korea’s provocations?
(GO) Q8. Sunday marked the 12th anniversary of the death of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and this was one of the reasons cited for North Korea’s missile launch. Now 12 years on from Kim Jong-un taking office, how would you say their styles differ from each other?
(MYERS) Q9. The U.S. passed the National Defense Authorization Act for next year worth 886 billion US dollars. Was there any noteworthy part of the bill?
(GO) Q10. South Korea’s defense ministry is to spend around 350 trillion Korean won --or 266 billion US dollars over the next five years to strengthen defense capabilities including the military’s “three-axis“ deterrence system against Pyongyang’s threats. How do you expect it to be bolstered?
(BOTH) Q11. With North Korea firing missiles and Russia, North Korea and China aligning more than ever before, the tension on the peninsula is growing. How do you forecast it to be in 2024?
Unfortunately, that’s all the time we have for today’s edition.
Thank you Doctor Go and Professor Myers for your time and insights.
We appreciate it.
