It’s the final week of 2023 and starting today we REVISIT some of the more notable events that shaped a number of arenas this year. That being said today we address developments in the geopolitical arena and their impact on Korea. For more I have Professor Kim Hyun-wook at Korea National Diplomatic Academy live on the line. Doctor Bennett it’s a pleasure as always. 1) Professor Kim, we started the year with hopes for peace in one war-torn region, but we’re ending with prayers for peace in two such places. First then, how do you assess Ukraine’s counteroffensive against Russia this year? 2) Doctor Bennett, how does the result of next November’s presidential race look to affect U.S.’s support for Ukraine? 3) Likewise, Professor Kim, how does a shift in U.S. leadership look to affect the direction of Seoul’s alliance with Washington? 4) Doctor Bennett, back on the broader international front. Speaking as a scholar, what are the prospects of Israel’s counteroffensive in Gaza triggering a broader regional conflict? 5) Professor Kim, also speaking purely within your capacity as a scholar, what do you believe would be a feasible way to end the current conflict in Gaza? 6) Doctor Bennett, the armed confrontations in Ukraine and in Gaza have raised tangible concern about the chances of a similar scenario here in this part of the world. What are your thoughts? 7) Professor Kim, perhaps as part of efforts to ensure a stronger sense of regional stability and security, Foreign Minister NOMINEE Cho Tae-yeol has highlighted the importance of Seoul’s ties with both Beijing and with Washington. Do you believe the Yoon administration is doing enough to better engage with Beijing? I mean, what more can be done to better promote productive bilateral ties? 8) Doctor Bennett, top U.S. and Chinese military authorities spoke for the first time in over a year last week.
