“Moonlight Sonata“ is one of Beethoven’s most famous piano compositions. It’s formally known as Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor “Quasi una fantasia“, Op. 27, No. 2. Composed in 1801, it’s divided into three movements. The first movement, Adagio sostenuto, is particularly well-known for its hauntingly beautiful melody and serene atmosphere. The piece’s nickname, “Moonlight Sonata,“ was coined by the German music critic Ludwig Rellstab in 1832, likening the first movement to moonlight shining on Lake Lucerne. Beethoven’s creation stands as a timeless masterpiece, beloved by musicians and listeners alike.
