AI Seminar 2021: Geoffrey Shmigelsky, “Commercialization & Using AI in Livestock ID and Monitoring“

The AI Seminar is a weekly meeting at the University of Alberta where researchers interested in artificial intelligence (AI) can share their research. Presenters include both local speakers from the University of Alberta and visitors from other institutions. Topics can be related in any way to artificial intelligence, from foundational theoretical work to innovative applications of AI techniques to new fields and problems. Abstract: OneCup AI uses computer vision to uniquely identify and monitor livestock in rural locations. The development of this technology includes solving problems that don’t occur in other AI & ML industries as we also need to consider lack of connectivity, outdoor installation and the unpredictability of livestock. This traditional sector is slow to adopt new technologies due to a lack of knowledge as to how these proposed systems work and what ROI they can provide. As well, new technology can often be cost-prohibitive to a producer operating on slim margins. OneCup’s AI syste
