Varna (Bulgarian: Варна) is the third-largest city in Bulgaria and the largest city and seaside resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and in the Northern Bulgaria region. Situated strategically in the Gulf of Varna, the city has been a major economic, social and cultural centre for almost three millennia. Historically known as Odessos (Ancient Greek: Ὀδησσός), Varna developed from a Thracian seaside settlement to a major seaport on the Black Sea. Varna is an important centre for business, transportation, education, tourism, entertainment and healthcare. The city is referred to as the maritime capital of Bulgaria and has the headquarters of the Bulgarian Navy and merchant marine. In 2008, Varna was designated as the seat of the Black Sea Euroregion by the Council of Europe. In 2014, Varna was awarded the title of European Youth Capital 2017. The oldest gold treasure in the world, belonging to the Varna culture, was discovered in the Varna Necropolis and dated to 4600–4200 BC. Since the discovery of the Varna Necropolis in 1974, 294 burial sites have been found, with over 3000 golden items inside. Varna (en búlgaro, Варна) es una ciudad del este de Bulgaria. Варна често е наричана „морска столица“ или „лятна столица на България“ и е важен туристически и просветен център, изходна точка за курортите по Северното Черноморие. В града се съхранява златно съкровище от халколита, за което до разкопките на Града на птиците край Пазарджик се смята, че е най-старото златно съкровище в света, дало име на т. нар. Култура Варна. След като са направени разкопки в Града на птиците край Пазарджик, е установено, че откритото там обработено злато е с 200 – 300 г. по-старо от предметите във Варненския халколитен некропол. Във Варна се провежда Международният балетен конкурс, състоящ се на всеки две години в Летния театър на Варна през летния сезон. Варна е кандидат за Европейска младежка столица 2016 г. и Европейска столица на културата 2019 г. Побеждава в надпреварата за Европейска младежка столица през 2017 г. Сред международните културни събития, които се провеждат в града, са фестивалите Варненско лято, Любовта е лудост, Златният делфин, Август в изкуствата, Видеохолика и други. Warna [ˈvarnɐ] (alternative Transliteration Varna, bulgarisch Варна) ist eine Hafenstadt am Schwarzen Meer in Bulgarien und nach Sofia und Plowdiw die drittgrößte Stadt des Landes. Sie ist Zentrum der gleichnamigen Gemeinde und der Provinz Warna sowie Sitz der Admiralität der bulgarischen Flotte und der Diözese von Warna und Weliki Preslaw. Die Stadt Warna ist administrativ in fünf Bezirke (Rajon) gegliedert. Warna ist der wichtigste Verkehrsknoten für den Nordosten des Landes. Der internationale Flughafen ist nach Sofia und Burgas der drittwichtigste des Landes. Warna besitzt nach dem Hafen Burgas den zweitgrößten Hafen Bulgariens und ist gut an das bulgarische Schienen- und Straßennetz angebunden. Die Stadt war Endstation der ersten bulgarischen Eisenbahnlinie sowie die erste Endstation des Orient-Express. Die Stadtnähe zu mehreren Sommerkurorten verwandeln Warna in den Sommermonaten in ein belebtes Tourismuszentrum. Die Hafenstadt ist das kulturelle Zentrum Nordostbulgariens und für seine Festivals auch international bekannt. Im Archäologischen Museum der Stadt wird zudem der älteste Goldschatz der Welt aufbewahrt.
