Bumbry performed at Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera and La Scala, under the baton of conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and Georg Solti, and was the first Black singer to gain fame at Bayreuth. She was proclaimed commander of the Ordre des Arts et des L
