Once someone establishes that they are a spouse, they are entitled to make a spousal property claim upon separation. There is a general presumption that all property is divided 50/50. However, this video discusses some exceptions to the usual 50/50 division rule. Some of the example discussed include property acquired before the beginning of the spousal relationship and treatment of inherited property.
