Tropical Storm Ana floods Eastern Africa on January 25 2022. The storm caused heavy rainfall in Madagascar, causing severe flooding in the country’s capital, Antananarivo. Low lying areas were flooded as rivers overflowed, with over 50,000 citizens forced to leave their homes. Residents were advised not to leave their homes where possible due to the impact of the rains. Landslides were observed, causing damage to buildings and roads. As the storm progressed across the Indian Ocean, heavy floods hit Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. River levels were raised to over two meters above their usual levels, with bridges destroyed by the force of the water. Electricity shortages were reported in Malawi as the storms caused power stations to close, leading to a lack of drinking water as water pumps were cut off. Rescue operations have begun, as water levels continue to rise. The extent of the damage is not yet known, with areas still cut off from aid. #floods #weather #antananarivo
