The ’Escape Pods’ That NASA Developed, But Never Used.

Crew safety has always been a core part of space engineering, and yet there has never really been a ’lifeboat’ or ’escape pod’ system deployed on orbit, but it’s not for a lack of ideas or even engineering. There were ideas developed and built out to support Space Stations being ferried by the Space Shuttle, but ultimately the solution which was built, the X-38, was cancelled in 2002 and the space station has never had a dedicated escape system.
