In this video, you’ll learn, step by step, how to form the simple future in Italian. Remember that:
-The future is a “long” verb because you don’t use just the root of the verb but the infinitive (e.g. “mettere”: metter-ò).
- For the first conjugation of verbs (ending in “-are”), you have to change the “a” to “e” (e.g. “guardare”: “guarderò” instead of “guardarò”).
- All three conjugations have the same endings: -ò, -ai, -à, -emo, -ete, -anno.
- For verbs ending in “-care” and “-gare”, since the “a” changes to “e”, you need to add an “h” in order to keep the pronunciation (e.g. “pagare”: “pagherò” instead of “pagerò”).
- For verbs ending in “-ciare” and “-giare”, as the “a” changes into “e”, you don’t need to keep the “i” for the pronunciation (e.g. “cominciare”: “comincerò” instead of “comincierò”).
- All the irregular verbs in the first group drop a vowel (e.g. “avere”: it is “avrò”, instead of “averò”).
- All the irregular verbs in the second group have “rr” (e.g. “tenere”: it is “terrò”, instead of “tenerò”).
- Future simple and present conditional are formed in the same way, they just have different endings! When a verb is irregular in the simple future, it is irregular in the present conditional as well.
Check out our videos on the present conditional:
Remember that, except in specific cases, we don’t use the pronoun with the verb (we say “mangerò”, not “io mangerò”).
