Spain wildfires: Tenerife blaze forces evacuation of 5 communities on island

A wildfire burning on the Spanish island of Tenerife has forced the evacuation of five communities, as emergency crews continue to battle the blaze that has been tearing through the forest near Mount Teide volcano, Spain’s highest peak. Firefighters have struggled to contain the wildfire, which started Tuesday night, because of difficult terrain made up of forests and steep ravines. “The fire is powerful and is in a complicated area,” Canary Islands regional President Fernando Clavjo said. The fire had destroyed about 130 hectares as of Wednesday morning and had spread to 300 hectares in just a few hours.
