Niger coup leaders warn of “consequences“ of foreign military intervention

Niger’s military, who overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum this week, said in a broadcast Friday that any foreign military intervention to reinstate him would result in “massacre... and chaos.“ The head of Niger’s presidential guard, Gen. Abdourahamane Tiani, appeared Friday on state television as the president of a military council that seized power in the coup on Wednesday. Tiani, who formerly led President Mohamed Bazoum’s presidential guard, said the military chose to usurp power in light of a deteriorating security situation and poor economic conditions. He called on international partners, who have all but universally condemned Bazoum’s ouster, to cooperate with the new regime “in the best interests of the country and the greater Sahel region.“ Bazoum remains in custody and has not formally surrendered power.
