David Bowie • White Light / White Heat • Live at the Hammersmith Odeon • 3 July 1973 • This video is a newly enhanced version of David Bowie’s performance of the Velvet Underground classic White Light / White Heat, at the final Spiders Hammersmith show in ’73. Surprisingly, this brilliant performance doesn’t seem to be available online at the moment, and since it is Lou Reed’s birthday today… • Within Bowie trainspotter circles, there has been lots of discussion over the years about the best way to make this video. Or specifically about the audio side. About 5 years ago, J. N. and I swapped many emails about this subject, and he had some definite ideas about how a ultimate master mix combing several different mixes from various sources, including the CD, the DVD, the original ’83 vinyl and Robin Mayhew’s original monitor mix. The latter being the only one where the horns are properly audible. Unfortunately creating that master mix always seemed beyond my capabilities and my patience. Apologies J.N. Moreover, for once I really like the official (albeit obviously overdubbed) 2003 CD mix.
