Two very different schools, Part 2
N = Narrator K = Kara
N: Another kind of alternative school is one that focuses
on special needs. In the UK there are fourteen schools
which specialise in teaching dyslexic children. Our
reporter, Kara – a dyslexic herself, talks about her visit
to one of these schools.
K: I’m really kind of excited about seeing a school that
specialises in something that I’ve had throughout my
life.
N: Shapwick is a private school with 170 boys and girls.
The classes are very small, so the teacher can focus
on the needs of particular students. The first class that
Kara attends is an English lesson.
Dyslexia doesn’t just affect reading and spelling. It can
also affect your short-term memory. Here, students
learn new words by linking them to colours, shapes
and stories. This makes it easier for them to remember
the new words. The students are very hard-working.
