THIS TIME, Richard Blandon/Dubs, Classic Artists CD #102 1991

THIS TIME, Richard Blandon/Dubs, Classic Artists CD #102 1991 Here’s another great uncharted song from my collection. The Dubs’ roots began in NY in 1956 when group members of The 5 Wings - Richard Blandon and Billy Carlisle (from Harlem) and Scale-Tones members - Cleveland Still, James Miller, and Thomas Gardner (from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens) merged. They first recorded as The Marvels: “I WON’T HAVE YOU BREAKING MY HEART”/”JUMP ROCK’N’ROLL” (ABC #9771) 1956. In 1957 they would change their name to The Dubs. Through the years they would have member changes and would go on to record for many different record labels: ABC, Johnson, Gone, Mark-X, End, Wilshire, Clifton and Josie. The Dubs had 3 songs charted nationally on Billboard. Their biggest and signature song, “COULD THIS BE MAGIC,” charted in November 1957 for 16 weeks and reached #23. It was a giant hit for them. “THIS TIME” was specifically written for The Dubs in their style by Dave Antrell (David Antrobus), a talented man who was a practicing physician, record collector, singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and producer from the early 1960’s to the late 1990’s. During the mid-1960’s while in medical school, Antrell wrote and recorded music with and for industry giant Gary S. Paxton (ACE, GAPAX labels). In 1970 he wrote and recorded his own music (MGM/Amaret Label) which never got much airplay. He graduated from University of Southern California’s medical school in 1974 and by 1980, had his own medical practice in Hollywood, Ca. at the Valley Oaks Medical Clinic. In the late 1980’s & 1990’s he wrote, produced & and performed for Bruce Patch’s Classic Artists Recordings label. Classic Artists Recordings label was created to record aging Doowop artists singing new songs in their original styles, perfectly fitting each act, composed and written by Antrell. When only the original lead singer was available, a Los Angeles doowop group originating from the 1950’s, The Calvanes, was used for the background vocals and Antrell performed as a musician. This was a novel idea in that it created a trove of great, NEW doowop songs by over 20 of these groups that included: Margo Sylvia and The Tune Weavers, The Blossoms, The Cleftones, The Dubs, The Skyliners, The Jaguars, The Channels and Rudy West & The Five Keys, Leon Peels & The Blue Jays, Johnny Staton & The Feathers, The Five Boroughs. “THIS TIME” was recorded in 1991 and put on Classic Artists CD # 102 titled “TASTY NEW DOO WOP”. The Dubs’ members on this recording are Richard Blandon, lead, Jay McKnight and Danny Foy. They had their own band backing them which included a sax, bass, guitar, bongos, drums and Joe Owens on piano. Sadly, Richard Blandon passed in 1991 after this recording but his unmistakable lead voice and his music lives on with us forever. Enjoy “THIS TIME” recorded in the same style of all of the other great songs that Richard Blandon & The Dubs gave us!
