The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate has said that access to the venue this year has been limited by Israeli authorities to fewer than 2,000 people, with 200 police officers on site. In previous years, around 10,000 believers have attended. Israeli officials claimed the security was necessary to ensure the safety of worshippers, with Easter, Ramadan and Passover all coinciding and tensions heightened between Israelis and Palestinians. The Church is Christianity’s most sacred site, while a tomb inside is believed to have held Jesus Christ following his crucifixion. During the ’Holy Fire’ event, presided over by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch with the participation of the Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem, candles are believed to be lit spontaneously, which are then blessed and carried by delegations to other Orthodox countries.
