The Ecuadorian government has officially declared an internal armed conflict in the country. Amid consideration of recognizing gangs as terrorist organizations, the president declared a state of emergency in the country and brought in additional army and police forces to fight the gangs, to which criminal groups responded with an uprising. At the beginning of the uprising, the leader of Ecuador’s largest gang, Los Lobos, managed to escape from prison.
