Prokofiev Symphony No. 6 in e-flat minor, Op. 111

It is likely that Prokofiev’s 6th symphony is the most compelling evidence of his genius. The composition’s themes of tragedy, sorrow, anger, and finally hope and joy are communicated with a proficiency rarely found in all of symphonic literature. There’s a wonderful article containing extensive commentary on this symphony: The work shares an opus number with Beethoven’s last (and possibly finest) piano sonata, and Prokofiev, who admired the piece greatly, is said to have considered dedicating this symphony to Beethoven. 0:00 - Allegro moderato 16:39 - Largo 33:32 - Vivace Performed by the London Philharmonic Walter Weller, conductor
