The West Coast Trail: An Experience of a Lifetime! This trail is very challenging physically and mentally, it requires some serious planning and preparation, but will reward you with one of the best experiences you’ll ever live! There’s 70 ladders, 130 bridges, lots of semi-functional boardwalks, plenty of mud, and a few cable crossings over rivers, it’s like a giant obstacle course! Originally called the Dominion Lifesaving Trail, the West Coast Trail (WCT) is a 75 km (47 mi) backpacking trail following the southwestern edge of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It was built in 1907 to facilitate the rescue of shipwrecked survivors along the coast, part of the treacherous Graveyard of the Pacific. It is now part of the Pacific Rim National Park and is often rated by hiking guides as one of the world’s top hiking trails The entire West Coast Trail is on the traditional territory of the Huu-ay-aht, Ditidaht, and Pacheedaht First Nations.
