If Bret lost the match, he promised to never wrestle again in the United States, so there was already a lot on the line. Soon after Bret made this announcement, Shawn Michaels was revealed as the special guest referee for the Hart vs Undertaker match and, what’s more, if Shawn Michaels favored The Undertaker or if Shawn didn’t call the match right down the middle, then Shawn also wouldn’t allowed to wrestle again in the USA. With these stipulations in place, the WWF had an incredible amount of creative options they could take. In the end, the finish of the match was one that no one could have predicted.
