Tavares ~ Don’t Take Away The Music 1976 Disco Purrfection Version

“Chubby & The Turnpikes“ was the first name for the group of the Tavares Brothers; Butch, Chubby, Pooch, Ralph and Tiny. They came from Cape Verde via New Bedford, MA and recorded several singles before they changed their name to Tavares in 1973 and had their first #1 R&B hit with a cover of Hall & Oates “She’s Gone“ at the end of 1974. 1975 introduced them to the pop audience in the US with a disco classic, “It Only Takes A Minute“ a #10 Hot100 hit and another #1 R&B which led them to be the opening act for the Jackson 5. In 1976 they released the LP “Sky High“ which contained the infectiously catchy “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel“ but caused them to be labeled as a disco group, especially after they recorded “More Than A Woman“ for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. “Don’t Take Away The Music“ was the follow up to “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel“ and it peaked at #34 on the pop chart.
