We Finally Played Chrono Trigger Music to Derek! 🌲

Derek’s cover of Sealed Door from #chronotrigger was a big hit, and several people have asked if he can improvise on Secret of the Forest, composed by Yasunori Mitsuda for the same game. Secret of the Forest is an interesting one as it is largely based on repeating chords that contrast but never resolve. It’s a good example of a piece that makes use of non-functional harmony to create a floaty, suspended, dreamlike feeling. With his highly acute sense of absolute pitch, Derek is very good at intuiting pieces like this and building his own improvisations over them. Listen to how perfectly he captures the ethereal tone of the original piece while adding his own character and creativity to it.
