Ibarra, also known as San Miguel de Ibarra, is an Ecuadorian city; municipal capital of the Ibarra Canton and capital of the Province of Imbabura, as well as the largest and most populated city of it. It is located north of the inter-Andean region of Ecuador, in the pit of the Chota River, in a valley crossed in the east by the Tahuando River, southeast of the Yahuarcocha lagoon, it is at an altitude of 2215 m s.n. and with a dry temperate climate of altitude, with 18 °C on average. It is known as “The White City“ for its white facades with which the rebuilt city was blessed in 1872 after the devastating earthquake of 1868. Also called “City to which you always turn“ because of its picturesque countryside, summer weather and friendliness of its inhabitants. In the 2010 census it had a population of 131,856 inhabitants, which makes it the fifteenth most populous city in the country. The city is the nucleus of the Ibarra conurbation, which is also made up of nearby suburban cities and parishes. The conglomerate houses more than 250,000 inhabitants. It was founded by Cristóbal de Troya, on September 28, 1606, by order of the Marquis Miguel de Ibarra y Mallea; and today it is one of the main urban centers of Ecuador. It is one of the most important administrative, economic, financial and commercial centers in the north of the nation. The main activities of the city are commerce, tourism, educational services, agribusiness, real estate and manufacturing.
