Allegro Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 4 in C minor, Op. 18 No. 4, was composed between 1799 and 1800, published in 1801 and dedicated, along with the other five quartets of Op. 18, to Prince Joseph Franz von Lobkowitz. Chronologically, it is the penultimate of Beethoven’s first six quartets. The penultimate in chronological order, this quartet was composed during the summer and autumn of 1799, just before Op. 18 No. 6. With its C minor climate (the piano sonata Op. 13 from the same period is also in C minor) and a certain effervescence of dramatic inspiration, this quartet is the most purely Beethovenian of the series.
