Chronologically, it is the third of Beethoven’s first six quartets and is sometimes referred to as the Complimenterquartett. Third in the order of composition, sketches of this quartet are mixed with those of the Variations for piano four hands WoO 74, written in May 1799 for Josephine and Therese of Brunswick.
