Meet The Brains Behind The Goldilocks Mastectomy and SWIM Breast Reconstruction

Plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Lisa Cassileth, and breast surgeon, Dr. Heather Richardson sought to provide more options for their breast cancer patients with the creation of the Goldilocks mastectomy and SWIM breast reconstruction. When faced with mastectomy surgery, breast cancer patients have historically had three options: reconstruction with implants, arduous flap/tissue transfer surgery, or opting out of reconstruction entirely and going flat. Dr. Cassileth and Dr. Richardson recognized a subset of the population whose needs weren’t being addressed: those who wanted an aesthetically-driven implant-free reconstruction that allowed them to keep their natural breasts. This idea of providing breast cancer surgery that is “just right“ inspired Dr. Richardson to create the Goldilocks mastectomy, removing all cancerous tissue and skillfully building a smaller breast using the residual healthy tissue. Dr. Cassileth advanced the technique with the development of SWIM (Skin-sparing, Wise pattern, Internal Mammery), preserving the nipple and recruiting fat from other areas of the body to further build a natural breast. The final result is similar to a breast reduction. CONTACT US --------------------- 📍 Bedford Breast Center 436 N.
