Percy Grainger ’Handel in the Strand’ arr. Sir Henry Wood - Bramwell Tovey conducts

Sir Henry Wood, founder of the celebrated Proms Concerts in London, celebrated his 150th Anniversary in 2019. A special “Tribute“ concert to mark the occasion was given by the BBC Concert Orchestra under Bramwell Tovey’s baton. It included Wood’s own orchestration of Percy Grainger’s “Handel in the Strand,“ a splendidly over-the-top arrangement first played at the Proms in 1916. (Apologies for the hysterical announcer at the end of this piece!) Also played in the same concert were three more of Wood’s arrangements. Here is his version for solo violin and orchestra of Wagner’s song for female voice and piano entitled “Traume“ from the ’Wesendonck Lieder’ ... Here is Debussy’s “The Sunken Cathedral“ ... And here is “Andaluza“ by Granados ... All very spectacular!
