Hemis is an idyllic village in Ladakh, in Northern India . The town is just over 40 km southeast of the town of Leh. Hemis is home to the Hemis Gompa a pre- 11th century monastery that was re-established in 1672.
Naropa is a grand religious and spiritual festival held at the Hemis Gompa once every 12 years of the Tibetan calendar to celebrate and rejoice the life of the famous Buddhist philosopher and scholar - Naropa.
Popularly known as the kumbh of the Himalaya, the festival receives nearly half a million visitors at this time. This is one of the biggest and most prominent Buddhist festivals in the world.
The Naropa festival in ladakh draws not just devotees but even general tourists to this land of passes.
Toothless grins, melodious chanting and spinning of prayer wheels while attempting to glimpse the famous relics of the Buddha, the atmosphere at the festival is a treat for all the senses.
This week-long festival includes several rare cultural events that are believed to grant spiritual liberation. The Naropa events bring together the largest assembly of Drukpa masters and include performances by prominent Himalayan artists, representing the greater Drukpa community.
A ceremonial unfurling of one of the greatest regional treasures – a thogdrel - the largest silk embroidery of Buddha Amitabha that stretches several stories in height, a beloved and sacred art piece that is only displayed to the public during the Naropa festival once in 12 years.
A Tribute To Naropa’, A concert was organized during the last Naropa festival held in 2018 and artists like Papon, Kailash Kher, regional artists and others from the rest of the Himalaya were seen performing.
The grand closing ceremony of the festival included a Guinness World Record attempt, where 299 people participated in the world’s largest Ladakhi Dance performance.
The glorious mountains of ladakh are the perfect backdrop for the Naropa festival. One not gets a beautiful insight to the festivities but it is also a delightful way to experience the rich culture and heritage of this land.
