Hyperpop: How Charli XCX Created a New Genre

*There has seemingly been a resurgence in this video’s outreach, which is great! However, I would also like to point you in the direction of the Hyperpop Origins series on my channel, which is an ever deeper dive into the history of this movement* *RIP to the legend SOPHIE. I know the title of this video has been frustrating to many, so let me make it clear here: there is no hyperpop without SOPHIE. Whatever you want to call this community, it doesn’t flourish to the extent it has without the foundations that SOPHIE built, both as a musician and symbol. And her impact on Charli XCX is essential to what she ended up accomplishing. SOPHIE’s ultimate decentralization in this video--contrary to my original plan-- is tragic in retrospect, as I never got the opportunity to spotlight her the way she deserves. But I can’t change the past. If you still plan to watch my project, I hope you at least get a glimpse into the world that she made possible. RIP SOPHIE, a true inspiration to all.* *NOTE: Hyperpop was NOT a term coined by Spotify (as I claim here)* There is an ongoing trend in alternative pop music that emphasizes a mixture of experimentation with classic pop aesthetics. In many ways, singer Charli XCX has become the face of this movement and continues to inspire and take inspiration from a new generation of pop artists doing really interesting stuff right outside of the mainstream. I outline here a chronology of Charli’s career leading up to the formation of this new sound--Hyperpop--and talk about a few of the new emerging faces of the genre. Enjoy :) Twitter | Instagram | Here’s a playlist of all the songs used in the video: I don’t own any of the songs or still images used in the making of this video.
