We see a very sensitively tuned-in mother, and a baby and mother who really enjoy each other. In two rapid, subtle moments, barely visible in real time, the baby becomes distressed, and we see the mother join her baby’s distress with an empathic “woe face.” In this way, babies come to feel known, recognized, and acknowledged when they are upset.
