We see a very sensitively tuned-in mother, and a baby and mother who really enjoy each other. In two rapid, subtle moments, barely visible in real time, the baby becomes distressed, and we see the mother join her baby’s distress with an empathic “woe face.” In this way, babies come to feel known, recognized, and acknowledged when they are upset. Mothers who have difficulty empathically acknowledging their babies’ distress more often have babies who become insecurely attached at 1 year. __________ Director: Karen Dougherty (FIPA) Producers: Beatrice Beebe, Karen Dougherty, Gavkhar Abdurokhmonova, Dorothy Engelman, Richard Quinlan Editors: Gavkhar Abdurokhmonova & Daniel Mejía Vargas Assistant editors: Jennifer Lyne, Robert DelGaudio, Amruta Wagh, Steve Lang Special Thanks to: Bernard & Esther Besner Infant Research Fund, The Miranda Family Fund (Hispanic Federation Funds), Nielsen Family Foundation, Ellen Greenhouse & Lester Wall, Louise & Martin Bickman, Karen Davis, Q Media Solutions, Jacktar Films, Miriam Steele, Joshua Mora, Jessica Benjamin __________ “Bensound - Once again“ Royalty Free Music: License code: ED5GS7FH6U4FXGHO
