Italy (1944)

Italy. This film is unidentified in the archive. However a member of the public has said: It is certainly Italy: italian troops and Carabinieri, plus a number of Italian politicians and intellectuals are shown, most prominently philosopher Benedetto Croce and former Foreign Minister Carlo Sforza (the two at the beginning). They were part of the second government headed by Marshall Badoglio, after Italy’s capitulation, and after that the first government headed by Ivanoe Bonomi. The government provisional seat was in Salerno (which was occupied by the allies in 1943, so the images most probably were taken there. They show the new ministers gathering at the “Palazzo di Città“, the municipality that served as seat of the government. Various shots two elderly men walking down street.
