The Innocent 1985

I recorded this movie onto VHS tape when it was first shown on CH4. The film contains many honest adult themes - It also has a gentle, natural, magic that has just stayed with me, over many years. Set in the Yorkshire Dales just after World War I. The film is about the struggles of a young Yorkshire boy trying to come to grips with his coming of age in a small town during a world economic depression. His squabbling but loving parents (Tom Bell and the beautiful Kika Markham) and a doctor who wants to institutionalize him because of his epilepsy add to his world. The Boy, Tim (perfectly played by Andrew Hawley), also acts as a go-between for his friend Carns (Liam Neeson) who is having an affair with a married woman (Miranda Richardson). Tim sees life getting more interesting and bigger when his rebellious friend Win (Kate Foster) comes back to the village. In one of many touching scenes Tim kindly shares with the rebellious Win the majestic sight of a Kingfisher in their local stream.
