The Impact Crater in Idaho & Montana; Beaverhead Crater
Approximately 600 million years ago what is now Idaho was the site of one of the planet’s largest asteroid impacts. This impact created a 60 mile wide impact crater, which has since largely been obscured by the overlying landscape. The crater in question is known as Beaverhead Crater, which due to a series of faults has moved 30 miles from its original location. Today, shatter cones and shocked quartz can be found at the site of this impact event.
