Porsche Panamera (2022) - Wild Luxury Sport Coupe!

2022 Porsche Panamera
Starting at $
Highs Lively handling despite its size, quick acceleration, plenty of practicality.
Lows Pricing quickly gets out of control with options, touch-sensitive interior controls are fussy, hybrid model’s braking system isn’t as refined as it could be.
Verdict If your ideal car is a 911 but you need more space, the Panamera is a good compromise.
Overview
There’s no rule that says you can’t daily drive a Porsche sports car, but the brand’s 911 and 718 two-doors aren’t the most practical forms of transportation. Luckily, the 2022 Panamera sedan couples Porsche’s fun-to-drive attitude with a four-door body and a premium cabin to create a more balanced option for those who need space for kids and cargo. Most models come with a turbocharged V-6 but a 473-hp twin-turbo V-8 is also available, as is a plug-in hybrid with up to 552 horsepower. The Panamera’s handling is engaging and eager, just like the brand’s sports cars, and its fastback roofline gives it a racier look than similarly priced sports sedans such as the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-AMG E63. If you need even more practicality, Porsche will sell you a Panamera Sport Turismo station wagon, or if you want more power there’s also the Panamera Turbo; we review both of those models separately.
What’s New for 2022?
A new Platinum Edition package is now available on 2022 Panamera, Panamera 4S, and Panamera 4 E-Hybrid models. The appearance package includes black exterior trim, unique 21-inch wheels with a satin platinum finish, and smoked headlamp lenses. Inside, Panamera’s equipped with the package sport Platinum Edition badging on the aluminum door sill protectors. The Panamera also gains the Porsche’s updated infotainment system—PCM 6.0—which makes Android Auto a standard feature and also offers wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity and built-in interfaces for both Apple Music and Apple Podcasts.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
Panamera: $89,750
Panamera 4: $94,350
Panamera 4 E-Hybrid: $106,350
Panamera 4S: $107,750
Panamera 4S E-Hybrid: $116,050
Panamera GTS: $132,050
Porsche offers the Panamera in such a wide range of models and prices, your budget and needs should dictate which is best for you. There isn’t a dud in the pack, including the base model, which churns out 325 horsepower and starts below $100,000. We’re also huge fans of the Executive models, which feature a longer wheelbase and offer considerably more rear-seat legroom than the standard body. For our part, we feel the Panamera 4S strikes the best balance between performance and value, with its 440-hp twin-turbo V-6 and standard all-wheel-drive system. Porsche also offers an endless selection of options, but don’t skip the adaptive air suspension, which improves the hatchback’s ride and handling, or the Sport Chrono package. The latter adds a Sport Plus setting with launch control and dials up the response and performance of the Panamera’s engine, transmission, and chassis.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
With agile handling and a smooth ride, especially when equipped with the optional adjustable air suspension, the 2022 Panamera is a thrill to drive. It also provides the comfort and luxury expected of such an expensive four-door hatchback. Every Panamera comes with a boosted engine, but only some wear the Turbo badge. We review those models separately. The base rear-wheel-drive Panamera and all-wheel-drive Panamera 4 feature a 325-hp turbocharged V-6. Under the hood of the considerably quicker 4S model—60 mph in 3.6 seconds—is a 440-hp twin-turbo V-6. Upgrading to the GTS gives you a 473-hp twin-turbocharged V-8. It’s the best performing of the non-Turbo line; however, its suspension sacrifices some ride quality in the name of handling. Porsche also offers plug-in Panameras, with a 455-hp powertrain in the 4 E-Hybrid and a 552-hp setup in the 4S E-Hybrid. Buyers looking for an all-electric Porsche should check out the new Taycan.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA has released fuel-economy estimates for the 2022 Panamera line, and none of them are particularly fuel efficient. The 4 E-Hybrid is perhaps the best of the Panameras in this area, as it offers a limited all-electric driving range before needing to fire up its gasoline engine. Otherwise, the most efficient of the nonhybrid models are the base Panamera and the 4 and 4S models, all of which carry the same 18 mpg city and 24 mpg fuel economy ratings.
