HOW I MAKE THIS MUSIC I make music using a variety of software and hardware synthesizers, but the core of what I do is using the free modular synth environment VCV Rack (). VCV rack is free to download, so have a go yourself. My pieces usually start with a random source, sometimes white noise and sometimes a random sequencer like the Music Think Modular Turing Machine (). I quantise the random sources into musical notes and then feed to synthesizers that make the sound. My pieces are long, but I like to keep them flowing and never repeating, so I use slow, sweeping low frequency oscillators to subtly shift and shape the sounds, evolving through different sounds and drifting across musical keys and scales. I design the pieces to run for long periods slowly shifting and changing so they never repeat, but stay in the same zone. Even in the 8 hour pieces the whole thing is unique and recorded in real time - usually left recording from the software and the physical machines while I sleep. I’ll try different approaches at different times. Sometimes I focus on chords and harmonies, sometimes on melodies which loop but shift slowly over time. Sometimes it is the warping effects that create the movement and progression. The visuals are based on photos and videos that I have taken over the years, given some subtle movement to match the atmosphere of the sounds. All music is original and copyright, it may not be re used without my permission.
