For nearly half a century since 1869, Nápravník was the principal conductor of the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre of St. Petersburg, Russia. In his nearly 50 year long tenure at the Mariinsky, Nápravník transformed the theater into an exemplary performing venue. During this time Napravnik conducted close to 3,000 operas, which included premieres by Russian composers, thus bringing to prominence Russian opera music. As a composer, Nápravník is known as an author of numerous operas and pieces of chamber music. Four of Nápravník’s operas were performed on stage at Mariinsky Theater.
