Who’s afraid of ChatGPT? | Heike Mersmann-Hoffmann | TEDxMünster

How will AI and large language models impact the life of students? Will they benefit from the use of AI? Or will they rather never write a piece of text without it anymore, and lose important capabilities? During her long experience in teaching, Heike has observed students’ learning behaviour, and she knows: teaching needs to change dramatically in order to keep up with technological change. The release of ChatGPT has amazed, intrigued, disturbed, and activated her to raising awareness about the benefits and limitations of AI on multiple levels. In her talk, she describes what teachers can do to truly empower their students. Heike has taught in various institutions. Currently, she teaches English at the University of Münster Language Center to students from a wide range of disciplines. She has been using digital tools and learning platforms in her foreign language classes since the 1990s - whether for organizing student exchanges, planning lessons, carrying out research, or learning. This has allowed her to combine her interests: a passion for teaching English as a foreign language, and experimenting with digital tools in the classroom. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at
